Holiday Safety Guide 2025 The holidays bring together what matters most—family, friends, travel, and celebration. It’s a season filled with festivities, reflection, and togetherness, as we take time to connect with the people who mean the most. Unfortunately, this joyful time of year can also bring unexpected risks. Here are the most common seasonal hazards and essential safety tips to help you and your loved ones stay safe, secure, and ready to enjoy every moment of the season. On the Road: Navigating Holiday Traffic Safely The highways and city streets get more crowded—and more dangerous—during the holidays. Here are a few key risks and ways to protect yourself and others. THE RISK OF DRUNK DRIVING Holiday parties and gatherings mean an unfortunate spike in impaired and risky driving. The consequences of a DWI can be life-altering for the impaired driver—but far more devastating for the innocent victims affected. Always have a plan: designate a sober driver, use a rideshare service, or plan to stay the night. Report suspected drunk drivers to local authorities. One call could save a life. THE DISTRACTION OF THE RUSH Between navigating to new stores, checking texts about dinner plans, and managing long to-do lists, your attention can drift from where it belongs—the road. Distracted driving takes many forms, and it’s a leading cause of crashes. Secure your phone, set your GPS before you leave, and stay focused. Get enough rest—drowsy driving can impair you just as much as driving drunk. PEDESTRIAN SAFETY Shopping centers and downtown districts are packed with pedestrians during the holidays. Drivers should slow down, stay alert, and leave time and space to react to the unexpected. Walkers—make eye contact with drivers and stay visible, especially at night. Avoid distractions such as headphones or texting when crossing busy texts or streets. At Home: Keeping Your Holidays Bright, Not Blazing Decorations bring the season to life, but they can also pose fire hazards if not handled carefully. Check Your Lights: Inspect light strings for frayed wires, cracked sockets, or broken bulbs. Don’t overload outlets. Water Your Tree: A dry tree can ignite in seconds. Keep it hydrated and away from fireplaces or space heaters. Watch Your Candles: Never leave burning candles unattended, and keep them far from flammable decorations. Securing Your Season: Online and On the Porch Sadly, the holidays also bring out thieves—both online and in your neighborhood. DEFEND AGAINST “PORCH PIRATES” With the surge in deliveries, package theft is rampant. Track your packages and schedule deliveries when you’ll be home. Use secure package lockers or have items delivered to your workplace. Doorbell cameras can deter thieves and help identify them if theft occurs. GUARD YOUR IDENTITY Online shopping surges this time of year. Protect your information: Only shop on secure “https://” websites. Avoid “too good to be true” deals—they often are phishing scams. Never use public Wi-Fi for shopping or banking. A Note for Freezing Weather: Understanding and Avoiding Black Ice Whether you’re traveling by road to visit family or friends or simply commuting around town, sudden winter freezes can turn highways into danger zones. One of the most hazardous conditions drivers encounter is black ice—a thin, nearly invisible layer of ice that looks like nothing more than a wet spot on the pavement. Also called clear ice or glaze ice, it’s not black in color—the dark roadway beneath makes it appear that way. It forms when light rain, drizzle, or fog meet freezing or near-freezing pavement temperatures, creating an almost invisible layer of ice that can send vehicles sliding without warning. WHERE BLACK ICE FORMS Bridges and Overpasses: These freeze first, since cold air circulates both above and below the surface. Shaded Roads and Downward Slopes: Areas without sunlight or with changing elevations are high-risk. Early Mornings and Late Nights: Black ice most often forms between sundown and sunrise when pavement temps dip faster than the air.
SPOTTING AND AVOIDING BLACK ICE Watch for dark, glossy patches that look wet when other areas are dry. Don’t trust your car’s temperature gauge—it may not reflect the pavement’s temperature. Slow down and maintain at least five seconds of following distance. IF YOU HIT A PATCH Don’t slam the brakes. Ease off the accelerator and steer gently in the direction you want to go. In a manual transmission, downshift carefully to help reduce speed. Avoid overcorrecting your steering—smooth, small adjustments help maintain control.

Even drivers with four-wheel drive can lose control on black ice. If another motorist causes an accident because they were driving too fast for icy conditions, they may still be held legally responsible.

You can’t sue Mother Nature—but you can hold a negligent driver accountable.
